Philippe Fayeulle is something of an adventurer. With his wife, he often heads off in his campervan to explore different countries around Europe. It goes without saying, therefore, that he is used to meeting strangers and adapting to new situations. Although he has a restless streak, his home base is in the small village of Vaudringhem, not far from Saint-Omer.

Philippe has a very dry sense of humour, and would be delighted to introduce you to one of his true passions: vertical popinjay archery. “This Flemish tradition, introduced by the Duke of Burgundy, is little known. For the past thirty years we have been part of the Société Saint-Georges de Watterdal. I’d be more than happy to give a demonstration to visitors if they’re interested.”

In terms of excursions, Philippe has “twenty-five thousand” up his sleeve. A viewpoint above Lottinghen is well worth the effort. The rando-rail (pedal karts which run on disused railway tracks) in Nielles-lès-Bléquin is great fun for youngsters, with two fascinating routes on offer. The bunker in Eperlecques and the La Coupole History and Remembrance Centre in Helfaut will both be of great interest to history buffs, while the Paper Museum is ideal for the whole family. “You’ll need to head to Mont Hulin, overlooking Desvres, to catch a glimpse of Highland cattle,” adds Philippe. “And while you’re there, why not visit the Faïence Centre and Ceramics Museum.”
